Sustainability on Campus: UMass Amherst Takes Solar To the Next Level

Located on the campus of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, this system totals 5.5 MW (DC) and features more than 15,000 individual panels spread across parking canopies on two separate parking lots and five rooftops.

Installing solar in eight different locations on one campus is no small undertaking. At its peak, the project employed some 70 people.

This system was financed through a PPA agreement under which the University will purchase the power for use by the campus.

This major solar energy initiative will cut its electric bills by $6.2 million over 20 years and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 31,000 non-metric tons of carbon dioxide.
